MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins have signed free agent cornerback Cortland Finnegan to a multi-year contract, the team announced today.
“I would like to welcome Cortland Finnegan to the Miami Dolphins,” said Dolphins General Manager Dennis Hickey. “Cortland is a tough, play making veteran that brings speed, leadership and another player with Pro Bowl experience to our secondary.”
The 5-10, 179-pound Finnegan joins Miami after spending the past two seasons with the St. Louis Rams (2012-13). Following six seasons with the Tennessee Titans (2006-11), which included a Pro Bowl selection following the 2008 season, Finnegan signed with the Rams as an unrestricted free agent in 2012 where he started 20 of 23 games over two seasons.
Finnegan has appeared in 116 career games with 99 starts for both the Rams and the Titans. A veteran of eight NFL seasons, he has recorded 601 tackles, 18 interceptions and 78 passes defensed. He was originally selected by the Titans in the seventh round (215th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft.
During his four-year career at Samford University, Finnegan was named first-team All-OVC three times as a safety and amassed 338 tackles, seven tackles for loss, nine interceptions, 26 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also returned 70 kickoffs for 1,980 yards which set a NCAA Division I-AA career record with 28.3 kickoff return average.
As senior in 2005 he was named first-team All-American by NFL Draft Report and first-team All-American by American Football Coaches Association en route to becoming the first Bulldog player drafted into the NFL since 1969. Born February 2, 1984 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Finnegan attended Milton High School in Milton, Florida.
