The San Diego Chargers agreed to terms on a three-year contract with former Indianapolis Colts running back Donald Brown, the team announced today. No other terms of the contract were announced.
After the team filled big holes by signing three would-be free agents – LB Donald Butler and S Darrell Stuckey, both team captains, and G Chad Rinehart, General Manager Tom Telesco continued to work to strengthen the Chargers with the addition of Brown. Telesco and Brown have a history together as the general manager was a key member of the Indianapolis Colts’ front office when they selected Brown with the 27th overall pick in 2009 out of Connecticut.
Over the first five seasons of his career, the 5-10, 207-pound runner has carried the ball 551 times for 2,377 yards and 17 touchdowns. Brown has averaged 4.3 yards per carry and is very secure with the football, having only one career fumble which came in his rookie season. The 26-year old is also a weapon in the passing game, posting 83 career receptions for 767 yards and two touchdowns.
Brown is coming off one of his best seasons as he averaged a career-high 5.3 yards per carry and scored a career-high six rushing touchdowns in 2013. Overall, he toted the ball 102 times for 537 yards while catching a career-high 27 passes for 214 yards and two touchdown receptions. In the postseason, Brown ran 28 times for 118 yards and one rushing touchdown, and also chipped in with five catches for 50 yards and one touchdown reception.
