Seahawks cornerbacks Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman are both facing four game suspensions for violating the NFL substance abuse policy. It was revealed recently that both players tested positive for the drug Adderall, which is subscribed to treat attention deficit disorder and has been used by athletes to stay alert and energized during a game.
Both Browner and Sherman intend to appeal their pending suspensions, and Yahoo Sports is reporting they each have an interesting defense for their case.
Richard Sherman claims, according to Mike Garafalo of USA Today, that he accidentally drank from a bottle into which a teammate poured a crushed Adderall pill. The person said the teammate is permitted to take the drug under NFL rules because he has a prescription.
Kevin Poston, Richard Sherman’s agent, responded to the NFL’s claim by stating: “What appears is not always the case,” Poston replied. “Hopefully, when the facts come out, justice will prevail.”
Browner, however, is claiming that there was an irregularity in his most recent testing, and that Browner insists that the person performing the test poured urine from one bottle into another.
Browner’s agent Peter Shaffer had this to say during a conference call with reporters.
“Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system,” Schaffer said, per Tim Booth of the Associated Press. “He is an outstanding person and a very good football player. He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We’re exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system.”
