After a three week investigation into the use of a “sticky towel” by the Chargers during the October 15 game against the Broncos the league has ruled that the towel did not violate the rules.
The Chargers were fined $20,000 for an employee they say failed to comply with the authority of the game officials when he walked onto the field with the towel. San Diego says it will appeal the fine.
The towel in question, a Gorilla Gold towel, and other products containing an adhesive will not be allowed on game days for the rest of this season.
“NFL game officials are charged with protecting the integrity and competitive fairness of the games,” an NFL statement Wednesday read. “Club staff members, like players and coaches, have a clear obligation to cooperate in this effort and comply with the direction of game officials.
“As a result of the failure of club staff to follow the directive of a game official to immediately surrender the towels when directed to do so, and to attempt to conceal the towels, the Chargers have been fined $20,000.”
