The second quarterback taken in this year’s draft is Washington’s Jake Locker, whom many thought might drop to the second round. The Tennessee Titans were apparently convinced enough of his ability to take him at No. 8 overall, ahead of every QB in the draft besides No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton of the Panthers.
Analysis: A year ago, some were projecting Locker as the potential No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. After a poor senior season at Washington, his stock appeared to drop. But the physical tools and the feeling that maybe he was held back by a substandard supporting cast with the Huskies moved him back up in teams’ estimation in the past few weeks. The Titans, on the outs with Vince Young, need someone who can start at the position next year. Locker’s a risk, but he’s thought of as heady and a quick learner.
