With the 19th pick in the NFL draft, the New York Giants decided to take the proverbial “best player available” instead of addressing an obvious area of need. They selected Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara, who had been projected to go in the top 10 but slipped past the middle of the first round.
Analysis: If they’d been drafting for need, the Giants would have taken an offensive lineman here, or maybe Alabama RB Mark Ingram. But the Giants like to take the best available player, which is why last year they took a pass-rusher in a first round when they had plenty and signed a safety in free agency when they didn’t really need one of those. Amukamara will improve their defense, and fitting him in will be a fun problem for Tom Coughlin and his coaches to solve.
