Dallas-The Dallas Cowboys and DeMarcus Lawrence have agreed on a five- year $105 M with $65 M guaranteed. This is the first time that another position outside of quarterback is guaranteed a lump sum of money.
Lawrence has paid his dues with being one of the most dangerous defensive ends in the game today. His stats prove that he belongs with the elites, as well as getting paid like one, but it will be interesting to see how he returns after having surgery this year. In his career, he is fourth in the NFL in sacks (25), tied for eighth in tackles for loss (29), tied for seventh in QB hits (49) and tied for sixth in forced fumbles (six).
Lawrence was one of the forces on the defensive side of the ball that saved the Cowboys’ season from sinking last year. After the second half of the season, the Cowboys buckled down and got themselves in position to make a playoff run. Despite going 1-1 in the playoffs last season, the Cowboys are feeling like they are on the right pace to make another go at the playoffs this year. Reconstructing Lawrence’s contract was a huge deal because now they could focus on negotiating a lengthy deal with Dak Prescott and finding other areas that they need to improve in.
Last season the Cowboys were ranked 7th on the defensive side of the ball and with this amount of money that Dallas is giving Lawrence, Dallas is making sure that he is the face of the defense, as well as having a lengthy career in Dallas.
