By: PPIDraftPro
The final day of testing saw the defensive backs take the field. We take a look at those workouts who stood out and some of the major news of the day.
TARON JOHNSON GETS PELTED LOOKING THE WRONG WAY
When Weber State cornerback Taron Johnson started in their version of the gauntlet he looked the wrong early and when he turned his head he was hit by a ball before he could adjust. We hope he did not suffer any injury from it.

STOCK REPORT
Below are those who helped and hurt themselves.
DEFENSIVE BACK RISERS
S TROY APKE, PENN STATE
The surprise of the day was Penn State safety Troy Apke who Deion Sanders even mentioned the fact he was white surprised him. He measured 6012, 200 pounds and put on a show with great shuttles, jumps, and speed. He ran a 4.34 40, did 16 bench reps, a 41 inch vertical, 6.56 3-cone, 4.03 short shuttle, and a 10’11 broad jump. Apke has impressed this postseason between this and a MVP performance at the NFLPA Bowl where he now may go as high as the late 4th or 5th round.
S TERRELL EDMUNDS, VIRGINIA TECH
Edmunds measured 6004, 217 pounds and did very well in the select drills he took part in. He ran a 4.47 40, a 41 ½ inch vertical, and 11’2 broad jump. He could go as high as the second round.
S DERWIN JAMES, FLORIDA STATE
James put on a show in the jumps and looked very good overall. After measured 6016, 215 pounds he ran a 4.47 40, did 21 reps, had a 40 inch vertical, and 11’0 broad jump. He looked good in the drills and should be the first safety selected.
CB DENZEL WARD, OHIO STATE
The former Buckeye turned on the jets with a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine on Monday. He should be the first cornerback taken after posting that blazing time with 16 bench reps, a 39 inch vertical, and 136 inch broad jump.
DEFENSIVE BACK FALLERS
S SEAN CHANDLER, TEMPLE
At 5104, 205 pounds Chandler struggled to post good times for his size with the worst short shuttle (4.62) and a bad 40-yard dash (4.65). He only had a 119 inch broad jump and 34 ½ inch vertical. We doubt the once likely mid round pick is selected now.
CB JAMARCUS KING, SOUTH CAROLINA
After an up and down performance in Mobile, King needed a strong performance here but at 6004, 182 pounds he ran a 4.7 40 and did not look good in position drills. We doubt he gets drafted despite having the length and height teams covet.
S MAX REDFIELD, IUP
The former Notre Dame product had a down season in 2017 and was snubbed by all-star games so he needed a good performance. At 6’1, 199 pounds he ran a 4.69 40 and did not look very good in position drills. If drafted, we doubt he would be selected before the 210-225 range and it would not surprise us if he is passed up in the 2018 NFL Draft’s seven rounds.
S VAN SMITH, CLEMSON
We were surprised Smith was invited to the event and his 4.61 40 along with a 29 ½ inch vertical verified that. We don’t see him getting drafted after a poor junior season where he got benched and now has posted poor results in the limited testing he did at the Combine.
