The home of the Golden Gophers is set to play host to another group of football players, the Minnesota Vikings.
On Thursday, The University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Vikings reached an agreement on the Vikings’ use of TCF Bank Stadium for the 2014 and 2015 seasons
The Vikings would play outdoors on the Minneapolis campus for two full seasons while the team’s new stadium is built on the site of the Metrodome.
NFL fans may recall the collapse of the old Metrodome under the weight of the heavy Minnesota snowfall. The new stadium will require all Minnesota sports fans to pay a tax on the new state-of-the-art facility.
The deal requires approval from the University’s Board of Regents. The agreement goes before the regents’ Facilities and Operations Committee on Thursday, with the full board scheduled to act Friday. University spokesman Chuck Tombarge and Vikings Vice President Lester Bagley say no details will be released until a briefing Thursday.
In an original letter of intent last May, the Vikings sent the school a tentative deal which would require them to pay $3 million a season for up to four years, plus revenue sharing.
