New York Giants safety Kenny Phillips has missed 6 games this season due to injury, but thinks the time off from the game has saved him money.
“I haven’t hit anyone in forever,” Phillips said. “It kept me from getting fined, which is a good thing. It kept a little money in my pocket.”
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Phillips was fined $30,000 dollars for a hit on Tampa Bay wide receiver Vincent Jackson two weeks ago. Phillips successfully appealed the fine and says the NFL targeting of him has “died down”
“I definitely try to be as physical as possible when I get the opportunity because you don’t get (many),” Phillips said. “I definitely try to take advantage of that.”
Stevie Brown has filled in for Phillips and has 5 interceptions since taking the starting role. Phillips is listed as questionable against the Packers this Sunday, and his return would allow defensive coordinator Perry Fewell to implement a three-safety alignment he used the majority of last season.
“I definitely don’t want to hurt the team in any way being out there,” Phillips said. “I don’t think I’m going to hurt myself. I think I’m going to be able to make plays. At the moment I feel that I can’t, I won’t go out there.”
