Saints QB Drew Brees broke Johnny Unitas’ NFL record of 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass in Sunday’s victory over the Chargers. The moment was extra special for Brees who had requested permission from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to allow suspended Saints Head Coach Sean Payton, interim coach Joe Vitt, and general manager Mickey Loomis to attend the game.
In a post game interview on NBC Brees said “I love my coach,” and that having Payton at the game gave a little “extra mojo” to the team.
Joe Unitas, the son of Johnny, was on hand to watch the game and Brees said Joe and the Unitas family were supportive of the Saints efforts to break the touchdown record.
Jon Zimmer of NFL media noted a few interesting facts that came together in a nod to #19 which Unitas made famous. Brees’ record-breaking first touchdown pass of the night was completed to Saints No. 19, Devery Henderson, and his second touchdown pass spanned 19 yards.
