Denver Broncos executive, and Hall of Fame quarterback, John Elway has grown from cautious about Tim Tebow, to embracing him as a part of the franchise. His latest advice for Tebow, for his first playoff start, is to “pull the trigger.”
Elway has been there before. His first playoff start was 28 years ago, and was also against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And Elway knows how to succeed in the playoffs, as he led the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances, the most of any quarterback in NFL history.
“[It’s] human nature, especially when you’re young, to become more cautious,” Elway said. “He had a tough week before [the Chiefs game] against Buffalo. The key thing for [Tebow] is to go out, put everything behind him, go through his progressions and pull the trigger.
And apart from just offering some fatherly advice, Elway does sound like he has confidence in Tebow to go out and execute.
“When you get into these playoff situations, he’s a good enough athlete, you know what, to pull the trigger. He’s obviously upset with last week. He’s already got an edge to him, so he’s ready to go. I like seeing the edge. Oh, yeah. I actually love it. I have full confidence he’ll bounce back and have a good week.”
The Steelers are big favorites against the Broncos this weekend, as Denver lost three straight to end the season, but got help by the Raiders losing as well to back into the AFC West division title with an 8-8 record. And the Steelers have one of the top defenses in the NFL, so Tebow will have his hands full against Dick LeBeau’s blitz packages.
