Buffalo is known for mother nature wreaking havoc on the city with its powerful snow and storms. There’s a new storm brewing and it’s not coming from mother nature. This storm is coming from One Bills Drive.
Prior to the season there was a lot of hype regarding the front four of the Buffalo Bills defense. After a dismal start to the season against the New York Jets, the Bills front four has lived up to the hype the last two weeks.
The Bills currently have the fifth highest sack total in the National Football League with nine sacks. The thing is in week one against the Jets, the Bills didn’t record a single sack. Seven of the nine sacks are from the front four with defensive tackle Kyle Williams leading the way with three sacks.
Still not convinced on how good they are playing? Well how about this stat. The last two games the Bills defense has allowed 17 points to the Kansas City Chiefs and 14 points to the Cleveland Browns, and that averages out to 15.5 points per a game allowed by the defense. The best average in the NFL is 15.7, which is held by the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles.
In other stats the Bills defense is tied for eighth in the NFL with four interceptions. That would have been higher if it wasn’t for a defensive penalty that nullified an interception. Also, they are tied for second in forced fumbles with four.
I did purposely leave out average passing yards allowed per a game and average rushing yards per game for a reason. Those numbers are skewed and don’t reflect really how well the defense is playing. For example, most of the yards the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense accumulated was in the fourth quarter when the defense had most of its second stringers in.
One could even argue that the points allowed per a game over the last two games is skewed a little as the Chiefs’ two touchdowns came when second stringers were in.
In the end, the biggest tests lie ahead for the Bills, as the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers are the Bills next two opponents, but there is reason to be hopeful in Buffalo.
