There are only three spots on the Buffalo Bills defense that is up for grabs in right defensive end, cornerback and strong side linebacker. Already, there is a new starter at one of those positions other than the person that came into training camp as the starter.
In an interview on WGR 550, Bills defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt revealed that Arthur Moats has the edge in the competition at strong side linebacker over Kirk Morrison who came in penciled in as the starter.
That is music to Bills fans ears as Moats has been a fan favorite ever since he put an end to Brett Favre’s consecutive start streak and arguably to his career since Favre only three seven passes after that. That earned Moats the catchphrase “Don’t Cross the Moats!”
Also, fans were never thrilled with the idea of Morrison as a starter. Morrison was a starter in the National Football League for the first six years of his career with the first five being with the Oakland Raiders and the last with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last season was the first season that Morrison wasn’t a starter.
However, the most important test for the two is still to come and that is preseason games. Practice doesn’t mean anything unless you can perform the same way on the field when it matters.
