Player to Watch: Geronimo Allison

In last week’s NFC Wild Card matchup, the Green Bay Packers handed the New York Giants a 38-13 drubbing at Lambeau Field.  Unfortunately for the green and yellow, the win came at a steep price with their coveted veteran receiver Jordy Nelson going down late in the first half with two broken ribs and a collapsed lung.  Nelson missed the rest of that game, and will be forced to sit again in today’s divisional round matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

Enter undrafted rookie receiver Geronimo Allison.

Since taking over for an injured Randall Cobb in weeks 16 and 17, Allison has become one of Aaron Rodgers’ go-to receivers on deep shots.  Filling in today for Nelson, Allison looks to be one of the focal points in the Packers’ aerial attack alongside a now healthy Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.

“If Jordy can’t go, it’s a big opportunity for me to go in there and make the most of it, try to be successful and execute the game plan,” Allison said.  “It’s a big game for us.  We know what’s at stake.  We just want to go out there, execute and be victorious.”

As the outside receiver opposite of Davante Adams, Allison will in all likelihood be stuck with crafty veteran corner Morris Claiborne in coverage.  It will be Claiborne’s first game back in action since suffering a groin injury that caused him to miss the latter half of the season.

In spite of the difficult matchup in front of him, Allison has been preparing for this moment since he got to Green Bay and looks to be ready for what’s in store.

“You never know what you’re going to be presented with,” Allison said.  “I’m always watching Jordy, Davante (Adams) and Randall, and trying to pick up things to help me better myself as a player and as a man.  Anything that they’re doing well, I try to take it from them and implement it into my game to be successful.”

When the kickoff commences and the game gets underway, Allison will be a player you’ll want to keep an eye on.
