The Buffalo Bills got a mixed bag of news today regarding the health of their roster heading into this weekend’s crucial AFC match up with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The biggest hit of the day came with the news that Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kyle Williams will be placed on Injured Reserve, ending his season.
Williams, 32, injured his knee in the Bills’ Oct. 18 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. After weeks of unsuccessful treatment, it looks like Williams will be shut down for the year.
“Looking at it, we at some point, it needed to be done,” Williams said, per ESPN. “We just hoped that it could be something that we could put off and I could get through the year and help our team through treatment and hoping that it would respond. How likely that was or not, I don’t know, but [we] tried to exhaust all options and cling to as much hope as we can.”
The defensive line lost another Pro Bowl starter in Mario Williams.
The defensive end will miss Sunday’s game after injuring his foot in Monday night’s loss to the New England Patriots.
Head coach Rex Ryan told the media that it is possible that Williams could miss another week, but that his foot injury isn’t a fracture and will not be season-ending.
On the positive side of things, quarterback Tyrod Taylor and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus each were bumped up to a “probable” designation, making them both as close to sure things as possible to play this weekend.
“Tyrod is ready to roll,” coach Rex Ryan said Friday, per ESPN.
Both the Bills and Chiefs enter the game at 5-5 in the crowded AFC playoff race.
Despite the same record, Kansas City sits at 6th in the conference while Buffalo is 8th.
The Chiefs holds the tiebreaker over the Bills at the moment, with their 4-2 conference mark (.667) edging out Buffalo’s (5-4, .556).
