The Baltimore Ravens have experienced their best year ever statistically thanks to the acquisition of Gary Kubiak as their offensive coordinator. The offense set a single season franchise record by scoring 409 points and produced 5,838 yards of total offense. The coaching carousel has started to spin and Kubiak is drawing interest. According to sources, there are three teams that have interest in the Ravens offensive coordinator. The New York Jets have already requested to interview Kubiak. The other two teams are from the NFC.
Kubiak was the head coach of the Houston Texans from 2006 -2013. He finished with a record of 61 wins and 64 losses during his tenure. His teams are known for the vaunted zone blocking scheme that has produced a large number of 1,000 yard rushers. Numerous quarterbacks have experienced their best seasons in Kubiak’s offense. Joe Flacco spoke about what stands out to him about Kubiak. “The confidence that he gives the unit. He takes the game plan that we built all week and applies it on Sunday. He has done a great job of making adjustments and making calls on the fly.” Flacco said.
Flacco has reached career highs in passing yards (3,986) and touchdown passes (27) in Kubiak’s offense. The quarterback has only been sacked 19 times this year, down from 48 times in 2013. The job that Kubiak has done with quarterbacks is one of the things that will be appealing to teams such as the Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears. These teams have a lot invested in their quarterbacks but are not getting the desired results. Colin Kaepernick, Geno Smith and Jay Cutler would surely benefit from Kubiak because he is a former NFL quarterback and sees things from their prospective.
Any team that is interested in speaking to Kubiak about their head coaching vacancy will have to wait until after the playoffs. “I’m consumed with what I’m doing. It’s not time for stuff like that. I talked to John [Harbaugh] Monday morning and I said if any one wants to talk to me, just tell them that I am a busy man right now. I have a lot to do.” Kubiak continued; “It’s always flattering as a coach if you’re mentioned by any organization in football but my total focus is on our football team and what we are doing. I am trying to enjoy right now.”
Judging from Kubiak’s comments, becoming a head coach again is not something that he is in any kind of rush to get back into. The situation would have to be ideal because he is very happy where he is with the Ravens. “I just don’t think about those things. I’ve been through it, I had my turn and I am really enjoying what I am doing. I don’t think about what’s next. I want to enjoy right now and that’s this organization, this team, these playoffs. I haven’t been there in a couple years. I am enjoying this and I want to stay focused. That’s been my message to John and my message to myself since I came here and I am going to stick with that.”
