In the early afternoon hours on Tuesday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a two-car accident near the team’s stadium, with both he and the driver of the other vehicle being taken to the hospital with non-threatening injuries.
Newton is staying at the hospital overnight for observation, though he has been found to have two transverse process fractures in his back, an injury similar to what Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered in a Week 8 Monday night football game versus the Washington Redskins. Romo was able to come back into the game, but rested the following week against the Arizona Cardinals, while at the college level, Baylor Bears quarterback Bryce Petty also had a transverse process fracture in his back, which caused him to miss a game.
Cam Newton is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center and will remain there overnight for observation.

Further testing revealed that Cam Newton has two transverse process fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries.

From what I've heard, Newton's back injury is comparable to what Dallas QB Tony Romo suffered.

While Newton’s playing status for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has yet to be determined, the potential degree of the accident through both the pictures and initial reports made it look like it could be a far more serious situation.
