The San Diego Chargers agreed to terms on a one-year contract with cornerback Richard Marshall, the team announced today. The Chargers now have every member of their starting defense from the end of the 2013 season under contract for 2014.
Marshall signed with the Chargers in late August 2013. He played in all 16 games and made six starts for the Chargers, including four straight to close out the regular season and both playoff games. He finished the regular-season with 61 tackles and six passes defensed and in the postseason he had a fumble recovery in each of the Bolts’ two playoff games. Marshall also had eight tackles on special teams during the regular season.
A second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2006, Marshall spent his first five seasons (2006-10) in Carolina, before spending a year in Arizona (2011) and another in Miami (2012). His career totals include 510 tackles, 18 interceptions and 67 passes defensed.
Marshall becomes the Chargers’ fifth unrestricted free agent to re-join the team, joining inside linebacker and defensive captain Donald Butler, safety and special teams captain Darrell Stuckey, guard Chad Rinehart and linebacker Reggie Walker. Butler, Stuckey and Rinehart re-signed their deals before the free agency period started. The Chargers have also signed five unrestricted free agents who previously played for other teams. They includeinside linebacker Kavell Conner (Indianapolis), running back Donald Brown (Indianapolis), tight end David Johnson (Pittsburgh), quarterback Kellen Clemens (St. Louis) and cornerback Brandon Ghee (Cincinnati).
