The Miami Dolphins announced earlier today that they have signed veteran corner back Cortland Finnegan. This signing gives them a solid trio of corner backs. The move was their third big name signing so far in their free agency period. Finnegan will bring a great degree of toughness to the secondary and will be a solid mentor for the younger defensive backs, especially Jamar Taylor.
Finnegan chose to represent himself rather than pay an agent. This decision did cause Finnegan to not be able to negotiate with teams until Monday unlike those players who had an agent. There was a non tampering window that opened on Saturday for teams to contact the agents that are representing players, but not contact players directly. Finnegan talked about the process at his press conference:
“It was a great experience being that this was my first visit. I spoke with a lot of GMs, head coaches, assistant coaches, defensive back coaches and just got their perspective on what they see as far as dynamics in their room, defenses that they run, all of those questions agents can’t really answer. I guess at this point it’s kind of cool if I were four years into the league it would be cool to have an agent, but the older you get I think you can understand where market value is, where everything is, put everything in perspective and go just help a football team win”
Finnegan spoke about how he is excited to work with Brent Grimes, a corner back that the Dolphins resigned. Grimes is another tough defensive back and will team with Finnegan to cause problems for opposing offenses. Finnegan is aware of the younger talent on the team as well. He knows that as a veteran, he will have to help them by displaying his experience in the film room and preparation for game day. His job will be to help second year player Jamar Taylor further develop. Taylor is another fiesty, smaller player that has an “in your face style of play.” Having a veteran with a similar skill set will only help. The signing will benefit the Dolphins in more ways than just Finnegan’s actually play on the field.
