The New York Giants had a horrendous season last year. They were cursed with key injuries, indecisive decisions by their quarterback, a failed attempt to have a positive running attack, and their defense just flat out did not play to their standards.
This year looks promising; coach Tom Coughlin had signed a two year extension, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride retired and was replaced by Ben McAdoo, and their receivers are getting healthier by the day.
Coughlin had mention that the Giants needed to improve in different categories: all last year he was stating the same message everyday “We haven’t scored any points, we haven’t scored touchdowns. We’re still lacking in the turnover area, which as I mentioned, I thought we had opportunities. There are some things that we are definitely trying to accomplish: putting pressure on the opponent’s quarterback, continuing to stop the run, having a good mix between the run and the pass, and having consistency.”We’ve got a lot of things to improve on.We have no illusions of the improvement that needs to be made, and I am talking about from the top of our team to the bottom,” Coughlin said.
In the 2012 season the Giants were ranked 13th in the NFL in red-zone touchdown percentage, scoring a touchdown on 54.8 percent of their visits. “[It's] making plays,” Coughlin said on a conference call. “Make a play, you know? Somebody, let’s make a play!”
“I think right now we just need something different, as far as an organization, or ownership feels we need something different within the organization,” the Giants’ vocal leader said on Radio Row at the Sheraton in Midtown during a promotional appearance for The Northwest Company. “That’s their choice to make. In this game, we live with changes each and every season. Unfortunately, it had to be those changes. I’m sure the changes will be made for the better of the organization.”
Change is always a good thing especially with the season the Giants had. Everybody is very optimistic about the strategy that the coaching department has in store. “Just speaking by what we have here, we just need to be more consistent and come out of the gates swinging a whole lot better than we did last year,” Antrel Rolle said.
