Shaw and Miami’s Jared Wheeler Connected at the NFLPA Bowl
South Carolina QB Connor Shaw will be at the NFL combine this week. His performance in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl helped get his invitation. Shaw led the National team in passing during the game as he went 5-7 for 71 yards and although he threw one interception his overall performance in the game pleased NFL scouts.
The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl ended up in the dismantlement of the American team as the National team won in a crushing 31-17 victory in Carson California. Two of the biggest leaders on the National team were Connor Shaw an University of Miami OL Jared Wheeler. The two young men teamed up together and were a key reason why Dick Vermeil won his third consecutive NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Game.
Coming off of an 11-2 season at South Carolina, Connor Shaw had a stellar senior year throwing for over 2400 yards, recording 24 touchdowns and remarkably having only one interception all year. He leaves the Gamecocks being the winningest quarterback in school history and ended his reign at USC with a hard fought victory over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Capitol One Bowl.
Jared Wheeler worked hard to have a great performance at the Collegiate Bowl, and he did not disappoint. When asked who has helped him the most during that week to improve his skills he specifically pointed out one coach.
“Our offensive lines coach, coach Will (Shields), he’s helped out a lot. He’s shown us new techniques, new little tricks and gadgets to throw against the D-line. Coming from a professional really helps a lot.”
Those tricks and gadgets were definitely seen on the field during the game and you could tell why he was named University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame Unsung Hero Award winner.
Wheeler is coming off of a great senior year at The U as he was a part of an offence that averaged 425.8 yards a game and 33.8 points a game. His versatility is what makes him a dangerous player as he played left guard, center and right guard all in his senior season. As mentioned earlier, Wheeler was named the 2013 University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame Unsung Hero Award winner.
