Bears Sign QB Jay Cutler to Seven-Year Contract

LAKE FOREST, IL – The Chicago Bears have signed QB Jay Cutler to a seven-year contract.

        Cutler is the franchise leader in passer rating (83.1), passing yards (14,913), passing yards per game (222.6), attempts (2,090) and completions (1,258). Cutler is also second in franchise annals in touchdown passes (101) and completion percentage (60.2) and tied for first with nine 300-yard passing games.

In 67 regular season starts with the franchise, Cutler has directed the Bears to a 39-28 (.582) record, including 13 games in which he led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime. He has added 811 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in 172 attempts with Chicago (4.7 ypc).

A captain all five years with the team, Cutler is the only player in franchise history with back-to-back 3,000-yard passing seasons (2009-10) and consecutive seasons with 20 or more touchdown passes (2009-10). He holds the Bears single-season mark in attempts (555 in 2009) and completions (336 in 2009) and two of the top three marks in passing yards (second in 2009 with 3,666 and third in 2010 with 3,274). His 27 passing touchdowns in 2009 are third most in franchise annals and his 23 in 2010 are tied for fifth most.

In 2013, Cutler’s 63.1 completion percentage was second-highest in franchise history. He completed 224-of-355 pass attempts for 2,621 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games played. His 89.2 passer rating was a career-high and sixth highest in franchise history.

This past season under first-year head coach Marc Trestman, Cutler was a part of a Bears offense that set a franchise record for total net yards (6,109), gross passing yards (4,450), net passing yards (4,281), total first downs (344) and passing first downs (215), while finishing second in franchise annals in total points (445). Chicago’s 45 offensive touchdowns in 2013 were fifth most in franchise history and most in the Super Bowl era.

Helping guide the Bears to the NFC Championship game following the 2010 regular season, Cutler is one of just three quarterbacks in NFL history to have at least two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns in a playoff game (versus Seattle in the Divisional Playoffs), along with Otto Graham (twice) and Colin Kaepernick. He is one of seven quarterbacks in the Super Bowl era to have four or more total touchdowns in their first playoff start and one of two to have no turnovers in such an instance.

During his NFL career with Denver (2006-08) and Chicago (2009-13), the Vanderbilt product has started all 104 games played, completing 2,020-of-3,310 pass attempts for 23,937 yards, 155 touchdowns and 112 interceptions to compile an 84.6 passer rating and 56-48 record (.538). He was named to the 2009 Pro Bowl in his final season with the Denver Broncos. Cutler has added 1,234 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 285 attempts (4.3 ypc) in his NFL career.
