During the Miami Dolphin’s fourth pre-season game at the Houston Texans, TE Dustin Keller suffered an injury that resulted in the ending of his season. On a passing play, Keller injured his right knee injury that included tearing his ACL, MCL, PCL, and the dislocating his knee itself.
Immediately upon hearing the news of Keller’s tragic injury, fans were distraught over who would be stepping up to fill his shoes. The Dolphins currently have three other TEs who are willing to step up their game to make big plays happen. These players include Charles Clay, Michael Egnew, and Dion Sims, the first two being veteran TEs.
Coach Joe Philbin did not seem too worried about the situation stating that “we’ve got some big targets. Egnew is a big man. Dion Sims is a big man. Clay has caught the ball down the middle before. We’ll adjust.” Although, Philbin was not completely impressed by the way Egnew and Sims played during Saturday’s game. They each had a penalty of their own, both for offensive holding while Clay also received a penalty for false starting. At the conclusion of the game, Egnew played the best with one reception for 14 yards.
There is still the potential for Miami to pick up a new free agent tight end before the start of the season. Tight ends that are a potential pick-up for the Dolphins are Randy McMichael, Kevin Boss, Evan Moore, and Todd Heap. Randy McMichael is in the forefront because of his familiarity with the Dolphin’s franchise. The Dolphins will have to make a decision within the next week in order to be prepared for their season opened at the Cleveland Browns.
