On Sunday, the Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) hosted the first of two family fall events in the South Florida area. The first one was in Fort Lauderdale as they were raising money and awareness for the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“So far we have had a bunch of families come out,” CEO of the Dolphins Cycling Challenge Michael Mandich said. “We really feel that kids can be cancer fighters too. In the past, we use to have a kids ride, but we weren’t able to focus our attention on it. Taking it where we can really focus our staff’s attention on it, makes it great.”

The event was held at Holiday Park and it featured activities for the entire family.

“This is the first time we’ve had the fall family fest and it is a way to get some of the younger cancer fighters involved,” Lisa Worley of Media Relations for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center said. “We want everyone to understand about research and finding cures.”

Kids ranging from ages 3-16 participated in a kids ride in a road-supervised, safe location with their families – from short loops up to 8-10 miles.

The events included a kid’s zone with bounce houses, animal exhibit, face painting, food trucks, an adult beer garden, Dolphins Youth Program activities and other activities.

“Every single penny that’s raised will go to the research to the Sylvester Comprehensive Center,” Worley said.

The Dolphins Cancer Challenge will host a second event next Sunday, November 15 at the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables, Fla. Registration ($15 fee) is still open for children interested in taking part in the event. To anyone wanting to donate to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge can visit DolphinsCancerChallenge.com.
