The Washington Redskins Have Shown Resilience in 2015

The Washington Redskins have been a resilient team this year. They’ve yet to have two consecutive poor outings, which could be considered progress for this team. Washington has found a way to avoid disaster, and that’s pretty much the story of their season so far.

In a way, you could categorize Washington’s season so far as being extremely inconsistent:

  • Week 1: Loss to the Dolphins
  • Week 2: Win vs Rams
  • Week 3: Big loss to the Giants
  • Week 4: Win vs Eagles
  • Week 5: Competitive vs Falcons
  • Week 6: Big loss to the Jets
  • Week 7: Big comeback win vs the Buccaneers
  • Week 9: Big loss to the Patriots
  • Week 10: Big win vs the Saints
  • Week 11: Big loss to the Panthers
  • Week 12: Win vs the Giants

You have to appreciate the resilience this team has shown. Although, pretty much every other game has been played at home — which is where all their wins have been obtained. However, even when you look at it that way, the Redskins are winning more games at home than they have since 2005. Not to mention, the five-game home winning streak is the team’s first in a single season since winning their first six home games in Weeks 1-11 in the team’s most recent Super Bowl title season in 1991. So there is some progress being made in that regard.

Statistically, the Redskins haven’t improved in many areas. The Redskins currently rank 25th in total offense (yards) after being 13th in 2014. Their defense in 2014 was seemingly worse than 2015, but statistically the team is ranked slightly lower in total defense based on yardage. A lot of that can be attributed to a much worse run defense, which is ranked 27th this year after being 12th last season.

The Washington Redskins remind me of the 2010 Seattle Seahawks in a few ways. That Seahawks team wasn’t very good, but they took advantage of a putrid division and entered the playoffs with a 7-9 record. That taste of success was progress for Seattle and it was the foundation of what became a very good football team.

Washington has meaningful December games for the first time since 2012. With three of their final five games being away from FedEx Field, Washington will have to prove themselves worthy on the road at least once. The Washington Redskins are not very good, but they’ve become very good at being okay. That, in a way, is progress.
