The Washington Redskins kickoff their training camp Thursday, July 30 in Richmond, VA and it’s certain to be one full of many headlines. Over the past few weeks we’ve projected the team’s final depth chart and graded each positional group. Here’s the results, including a stock check of each position:
Quarterbacks Position Grade: D -
- Robert Griffin III
- Colt McCoy
- Kirk Cousins
Griffin is undoubtedly the most talented of the bunch and will receive seemingly his final shot at being the team’s starting QB. But this position is pretty horrible. I honestly don’t know what to expect from Griffin. He’s a talent for sure. You just have to hope he puts it all together and that the coaches use him correctly. Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins both have their issues. I like each guy as a back-up QB, but neither is going to win you games.
Running Back/Fullback Position Grade: B
- Alfred Morris
- Matt Jones
- Trey Williams
- Darrel Young
Although I think Alfred Morris has leveled off, the addition of Matt Jones makes the future at running back a little brighter.
Offensive Line Position Grade: C+
- Trent Williams
- Shawn Lauvao
- Kory Lichtensteiger
- Spencer Long
- Brandon Scherff
- Morgan Moses
- Arie Kouandjio
- Tom Compton
- Takoby Cofield
The future is bright for the Redskins across the offensive line. I like the youth they have in place. Plus you have to think they’ll continue adding in the future. Bill Callahan adds to the upside.
Tight End Position Grade: C+
- Jordan Reed
- Niles Paul
- Logan Paulsen
Jordan Reed is a great talent, however, he’s always injured. That adds a question mark to this position. Although I like Niles Paul, I’m not certain he can consistently be a threat at the position like Reed would be.
Linebacker Position Grade: B+
(ILB):
1. Keenan Robinson
2. Perry Riley
3. Will Compton
4. Martrell Spaight
5. Alonzo Highsmith
(OLB):
1. Ryan Kerrigan
2. Trent Murphy
3. Preston Smith
4. Jackson Jeffcoat
I actually really like what the Redskins have at linebacker. In my opinion, it’s by far the deepest position on the team and it’s loaded with young players.
Defensive Line Position Grade: C
1. Terrance Knighton
2. Stephen Paea
3. Jason Hatcher
4. Ricky Jean-Francois
5. Chris Baker
6. Kedric Golston
7. Frank Kearse
This year, and this year only, the stock is up for Washington’s defensive line. They improved from last year. However, it’s the oldest position on the team and one of the oldest in the NFL. They need to improve this area in the near future.
Cornerback Position Grade: B-
1. Chris Culliver
2. Bashaud Breeland
3. DeAngelo Hall
4. David Amerson
5. Tevin Mitchell
Based off his tenure with the 49ers, Culliver has some great upside to become a shutdown corner. Breeland, in my mind, can be one of the best in the league. David Amerson has endless talent, but has to put it all together. Tevin Mitchell has the ability to cover the slot. Lots of young talent here. The future is bright.
Safety Position Grade: C-
1. Dashon Goldson
2. Jeron Johnson
3. Duke Ihenacho
4. Akeem Davis
I don’t know what to expect from this position. I like the potential of Jeron Johnson. Can Dashon Goldson play like he did in San Francisco? It’ll be interesting to watch.
