Redskins top needs: DL, RT, G/C, WR, S, CB, ILB
The Washington Redskins will lose London Fletcher to retirement this year. His impact was at an all-time minimum last season. But it’s been clear for a couple years now an upgrade was needed. Washington thought they had that in 2012 fourth round selection Keenan Robinson, but he’s been unable to stay healthy. If Robinson can stay healthy, he’s a talented athlete with coverage skills and upside. However, he’s missed valuable development time. The team can’t hang their hat on Robinson returning and having an impact.
Of course, in a 3-4 alignment — two guys man the inside and 2010’s fourth round pick Perry Riley has been a starter for the past 2 1/2 seasons. Riley is a free agent this off-season but will be a priority re-sign for the team. However, that doesn’t mean they’re set with Perry Riley. He’s flashed good ability. But hasn’t proven to be an above average player. Maybe with an athlete next to him, it’ll help him blossom.
Moving forward, the Redskins need a game changer in the middle of their defense. A guy who can go sideline to sideline — covering the many tight ends and running backs in the NFC East that have made life difficult for Washington in the past. In addition to, the ability to crash downhill and make plays in the backfield.
With that being said, here’s my rankings of Free Agent Inside Linebackers and Draft prospects that fit the possible mold.
Free Agent Inside Linebackers:
1. Desmond Bishop, 29, Minnesota Vikings (6ft 2, 244 lbs)
2. Karlos Dansby, 32, Arizona Cardinals (6ft 4, 250 lbs)
3. Daryl Smith, 32, Baltimore Ravens (6ft 2, 248 lbs)
4. Arthur Moats, 26, Buffalo Bills (6ft 2, 250 lbs)
5. Donald Butler, 25, San Diego Chargers (6ft 1, 242 lbs) — would be higher, but think Chargers retain him.
NFL Draft Inside Linebackers:
1. Kyle Van Noy, Brigham Young (6ft 3, 244 lbs)
2. Christian Jones, Florida State (6ft 4, 234 lbs)
3. Yawin Smallwood, UConn (6ft 3, 236 lbs)
4. Jordan Tripp, Montana (6ft 3, 237)
