The Washington Redskins had a very poor season in 2014. But one of the oddest performances throughout the season was RB Alfred Morris, who only had one 100 yard game — and that came in week 12.
For several reasons, the Redskins just were unable to get a ground game consistently rolling. When studying the film, it appeared to be a dumpster-load of issues that prevented the run game from clicking. Some of it was on the offensive line that was unable to consistently get to the second level. You could also attribute it to the lack of a blocking tight end and receivers who didn’t block well down-the-field. The Quarterback issues definitely didn’t help. But you could also say some of it was on Alfred Morris who missed opportunities himself in the backfield.
Washington Redskins’ FB Darrel Young called the team’s rushing performance last season, “embarrassing.” In speaking with Young at “Recess With The Redskins” last Friday, it was interesting to hear him take responsibility and some of the blame for Morris’ struggles. “There’s some games last year that Alfred numbers-wise, we weren’t where we were supposed to be,” said Darrel Young.
He continued, “guys up front blocking for him, like myself — I have to do a better job. It’s embarrassing when a guy gets a three yard loss when the guy just ran for 1,600 yards two years ago. He still made 1,000 yards, but it wasn’t the way we wanted to do it. When we’re clicking and the run game is clicking, then it’s less pressure on RGIII or the other Quarterbacks that were in there.”
With new Offensive Line Coach Bill Callahan, it’ll be interesting to see how and if the team’s run game improves. Both Darrel Young and Alfred Morris expressed their excitement for whatever Callahan plans to implement.
One thing is for sure, the duo of Morris and Young should make things easier for Callahan this upcoming season. In a league that now appears to be devaluing the fullback position, Washington has a good one in Darrel Young and Morris greatly appreciates him.
Alfred Morris says it’s “awesome” having Darrel Young as his lead blocker. “I love DY — he’s a clown,” said Morris as Darrel Young danced behind him to ‘Uptown Funk.’ “He has his issues [he joked] but I love him. I wouldn’t prefer anyone else blocking for me.”
If the Washington Redskins plan to have a successful season on offense, it must start with the run game. If Alfred Morris is able to get going, everything else should fall into place.
