We’ve started installing our Washington Redskins 2012 positional evaluations -
With each evaluation, we’ll write a corresponding piece on how the Redskins could address the positional need in Free Agency.
The secondary is without a doubt the Redskins top off-season need. They have to get bigger, faster, younger and technically sound at the position. They need defensive backs with awareness, God-given instincts and a physical mentality.
From what I’ve heard – the Redskins will hope to solidify the conerback position in Free Agency. But with their cap penalty, it will be difficult. The draft is full of talented defensive backs. So, whatever Washington can’t find in free agency, they will hope to find good players in the NFL draft. Assuming the players Washington covets hit the open market, it’s a position that can be upgraded when Free Agency begins.
Here’s the names of CBs who could be high on Washington’s priority signing list -
- Kennan Lewis, Pittsburgh Steelers - This is a 6ft defensive back with attitude and upside. He’s 26 years old and had a great season in 2012.
- Greg Toler, Arizona Cardinals - When you think about Arizona DBs, Toler is not the first name that comes to mind. However, he had an outstanding 2012 campaign before getting injured and placed on IR. He’s also 6ft tall and just turned 28 on January 2nd – so he’s still fairly young. Not to mention, he’s from the Washington D.C area. I’m not certain if Toler has as much upside as Lewis, but he would definitely be an upgrade for the Redskins.
- Aqib Talib, New England Patriots - It’s no secret, there are a few guys in Washington’s organization that loves Aqib Talib. All indications point to the Patriots allowing him to hit the open market to discover what he’s worth. Although, Toler and Lewis may be more likely signings. Talib ‘s 6ft 1 and will turn 27 in February. If his play in New England is any indication, he’s a guy that’s just scratching the surface of his potential. But there’s always a risk with him, and he probably won’t come cheap.
