Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has decided to make a switch as well, and has announced that he will be starting John Beck this week.
After holding the door open on the quarterback situation throughout the preseason, Shanahan decided to go with Rex Grossman over John Beck for the season opener, and Grossman led the team to a 3-1 start.
But in last week’s loss to division rival Philadelphia, Grossman was pulled in favor or Beck, who led the team to its only touchdown. Grossman was 9 of 22 for 143 yards, but the real problem was no TDs and 4 INTs. Beck was better in relief, going 8 of 15 for 117 yards, plus he ran in their late touchdown from 2 yards out.
So far this year, Grossman is completing a little over 55 percent of his passes, and has 6 TDs and 9 INTs, along with 2 fumbles, so protecting the ball has been an issue.
Beck was very solid in the preseason, so he does deserve a chance to see what he can do. And with Carolina on the schedule for next week, who has the second worse rushing defense in the league, it’s not a bad time to experiment at quarterback.
