The Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl in convincing fashion. They set the bar for how to put together a championship team. As a result, there are going to more teams that put a focus on having a top level defense along with an ultra efficient, run based offense. The Seahawks have succeeded based off of sticking to their guns and taking players that they felt were the best match, even if it didn’t agree with conventional wisdom. As a result, they have put together one of the more complete rosters in the NFL. The 2014 NFL Draft will give them yet another chance to add to their already talented collection of players. Here are some options that they can consider with the last pick in the first round:
Kelvin Benjamin WR Florida State
Benjamin would be the perfect compliment to Percy Harvin. He is a big bodied receiver that would add a special element to the offense, a red zone threat. There isn’t a more dangerous red zone threat in this draft. Some do question his catching ability, but when the chips are on the table, he has proven that he can come through for his team. Another worry has been his work ethic but that should not be a concern if he ends up with the Seahawks. There are few coaches that are better than Pete Carroll when it comes to getting the most from their players. His enthusiasm is contagious. The Seahawks are the perfect spot for Benjamin.
Xavier Su’a-Filo OG UCLA
Before the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, Gil Brandt said that Su’a-Filo would be the prospect that will improve his stock the most. The Seahawks love to run the ball with a power running style. Su’a-Filo is the type of lineman that will attack defenders in the running game. He is an athletic player that can play tackle but is best when put at guard. There was a rotation of players at guard for the Seahawks last year which is a rarity. They can sure up one of the guard spots if they draft Xavier Su’a-Filo.
Ra’Shede Hageman DL Minnesota
Hageman is another question mark when it comes to motivation. This is once again something that shouldn’t be a worry to the Seahawks because of Pete Carroll and his coaching staff. They have a stable of players that can rush the passer off the edge and Red Bryant has moved on. Bryant was solid at getting an inside push to flush the quarterback out to their outside rushers. Hageman will be able to do the same thing, just better. When he is motivated, he is an almost unblockable force. He would help the Seahawks defense by filling the gap left by Bryant. They can bump him inside to defensive tackle on passing downs. That gives them a chance to have a pretty formidable sub package.
Jason Verrett CB TCU
This would be a steal for the Seahawks. Pete Carroll loves his physical, in your face corners. Verrett is the kind of corner that could really help the Seahawks. He is one of the best cornerback’s in the draft. He can press and he has some of the best feet. The bottom line, Jason Verrett is a player that wold be a perfect match. He could challenge for a major role on the defense because of his ability to be a nickel back.
The Seahawks have the pick that everyone wants. Being the last to pick means that they won it all. This draft has it’s share of talented players and there will be a very talented player there for them as they close out the first day of the draft.
