Santonio Holmes Healing Slower than Expected

The New York Jets were dealt some less than encouraging news this afternoon, as it appears WR Santonio Holmes (foot) may have to start training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

For a team that is already thin at wide receiver, this could be a devastating blow. So far the Jets are already without WR’s Steven Hill (knee), Jeremy Kerley (heel), and Clyde Gates (hamstring). Holmes, who is recovering from the Lisfranc foot injury that caused him to miss all but four games last season was supposed to be back by the start of training camp. As camp looms nearer, the team is not sure whether their number one receiver will be able to join them.

“There’s a possibility he maybe starts out on PUP,” head coach Rex Ryan said.  “I’m not sure. But he seems to be doing well.”

Holmes had just 20 receptions last year for 272 yards and one touchdown. The Jets ranked 30th in the NFL in passing offense last season. With the team’s top three receivers, Holmes, Hill and Kerely on the shelf, it will be tough for either Mark Sanchez or Geno Smith to develop the chemistry necessary to improve the passing game in 2013.
