Despite all player discipline being thrown out and the league getting a slap for its faulty “bounty” investigation from former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, Saints HC Sean Payton remained in exile. On Friday the Saints family got news that their New Year’s wish was coming true with Payton and the team reaching a deal that would bring their coach back in 2013.
The agreement is still subject to approval by the NFL. Payton has been suspended for the entire season by the league and was originally eligible to apply for reinstatement on February 4. According to the The Times-Picayune, the league declined to comment when asked if Payton is eligible for reinstatement before the 4th.
Speculation had been circulating that Payton would possibly join Dallas but that was something that Saints’ owner Tom Benson wasn’t concerned about. “He’s always been our head coach. I never had any doubt about that,” Benson said.
