Rookie Draft Cards, Painting on a Tiny Canvas

These two hand drawn, one of a kind, pieces of original art were created for Beckett Media as part of an ongoing series of Athletes Artist sketch cards.  Rob Jackson is called on by Beckett whenever a notable event takes place, to create a card that will commemorate certain moments in sports.

These two cards were obviously created for the NFL Draft, to commemorate the quarterbacks that were ultimately taken first and second in the draft.  Jackson was asked to produce cards of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III as a part of their expected NFL teams.

At the size of a football card, you can only imagine the precision it takes to create a painting with any detail at all, on such a tiny canvas.

A beneficial aspect of sketch cards for professional artists is that they can be done very quickly. While Jackson’s commissioned paintings can take days or even weeks to complete, sketch cards take just hours. So

Keep an eye out, you may just find the next NFL headline to be airbrushed on a 2.5 x3.5 piece of illustration board.
