Three years ago Washington Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan set forth on a mission to provide children battling serious illnesses with an electronic hub full of games and movies to ensure their stay in the hospital is the absolute best it can be.
Last month the CPMG Foundation, alongside Ryan Kerrigan of the Washington Redskins launched “Kerrigan’s Korner” at the HSC Pediatric Center.
The HSC Pediatric Center is a medical facility for youth with long term hospital stays. The Kerrigan’s Korner transformed a room at the pediatric center to give hospitalized children access to tablets, laptops, PlayStations, DVDs, games and other electronics.
The room was sponsored by the CPMG Foundation and Ryan Kerrigan’s Blitz for the Better Foundation. The devices will be used for therapy, entertainment and communication with people outside the hospital.
Kerrigans’ Blitz for the Better Foundation provides opportunities, support and resources to children and families in need in the Greater Washington D.C. area. Inspired by his cousin who had special needs, Kerrigan made it his mission to help seriously ill, special needs and physically challenged children.
2016 marked the foundations third “Kerrigan’s Korner”. “Each one seems to be getting better and better,” Kerrigan said.
Earlier this spring, the second Kerrigan’s Korner was unveiled at Inova Children’s Hospital. Like the previous installation, electronic devices were available as well as acrylic paint, canvases, fashion design kits, adult/teen coloring books and a foosball table.
“I am happy that the location of my second Kerrigan’s Korner is Inova Children’s Hospital. It’s important for kids to have outlets like these, especially in a hospital – it serves as a welcomed distraction and form entertainment during their hospital stays,” said Kerrigan.
The first Kerrigan’s Korner was at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. back in 2015.
More hospitals in the D.C. area could see a Kerrigan’s Korner in the future as Ryan continues to expand and provide opportunities for the children through his Blitz for The Better Foundation.
