The Washington Redskins have announced that Mike Shanahan has been fired as head coach. The Redskins finished the season with a 3-13 record and an abysmal 0-6 record in the division.
As the clock hit zero in yesterday’s 20-6 loss the Giants, it seemed almost certain that Shanahan’s tenor as head coach of Washington was over.
“Redskins fans deserve a better result,” Owner Daniel M. Snyder said. “We thank Mike for his efforts on behalf of the Redskins. We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team, and my pledge to this organization and to this community is to continue to commit the resources and talent necessary to put this team back in the playoffs.”
The Redskins also part ways with assistant coaches Keith Burns, Larry Coyer, Richmond Flowers, Matt LaFleur, Mike McDaniel, Kyle Shanahan, Bob Slowik, and Bobby Slowik.
The biggest storyline of this season for Washington was the return of franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III and the rift between he and both Mike and Kyle Shanahan. This season almost made fans forget about the electric and balanced offense the Redskins had last season. RG3 struggled all year before being benched a few weeks ago. The offense this year was constantly out of sync with RG3 and the coaching staff never seeming to be on the same page. After a 24-16 loss to Philadelphia in Week 13, RG3 went as far as to insinuate that the Redskins play calling was predictable for opposing defenses.
Shanahan finishes his 4 year stint in Washington with a 24-40 record and one playoff appearance.
