The NFL’s preseason opener between the Green Bay Packers and the Indianapolis Colts was cancelled on Sunday night due to unsafe field conditions. Hall of Fame president David Baker said the wrong kind of paint was used on the midfield logo and in the endzones, making the field slick. Murmurs of the cancellation started to swirl around 6 p.m., with the NFL’s mobile site making the official announcement at 6:15. Player safety is at an all-time high – I’m even a fan of shortening the preseason – but this isn’t how we accomplish that. Players from both teams’ made comments on the cancellation on their social media pages.

Fans felt nothing but disappointment. Hall of Fame president David Baker did say that fans would be refunded their money. The NFL and the NFLPA issued this statement. “Due to safety concerns with the condition of the playing surface in Canton, tonight’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers has been cancelled. We are very disappointed for our fans, but player safety is our primary concern, and as a result, we could not play an NFL game on this field tonight.” With this cancellation, we’ll have to wait until Thursday to get our first NFL preseason game when Washington visits Atlanta and Philadelphia hosts Tampa Bay.
