Quick Game Recap: Redskins upset Eagles, 27-24

In an NFC East division battle, the Redskins (4-11) played spoiler, beating the Eagles (9-6) 27-24, putting their hopes for the postseason in huge peril.

On its opening drive, Philadelphia went across midfield, but then Mark Sanchez was strip-sacked by Ryan Kerrigan, who recovered at the Eagles’ 48 yardline. Washington took advantage, as they drove 40 yards in 12 plays, ending with a 25 yard field goal by Kai Forbath with six minutes left in the first quarter, though the Eagles responded with a 10 play, 79 yard drive, with LeSean McCoy rushing for an 11 yard touchdown with 1:49 left in the first quarter.

The Redskins would not take long to retake the lead, though, as a three play drive that included a 51 yard throw from Robert Griffin III to DeSean Jackson concluded with a 28 yard touchdown run by Alfred Morris with 29 seconds left in the first quarter.  But Philadelphia would go up ahead before the end of the half, as they drove 93 yards in 15 plays, with Mark Sanchez converting a 3rd and 25 with a 26 yard pass to rookie Jordan Matthews, and a 3rd and 15 with an 18 yard gain on a screen pass by Darren Sproles before throwing a three-yard touchdown to Riley Cooper with 3:30 left in the half, making it 14-10 when the teams entered the locker room.

The second half for Washington appeared to start bad when Andre Roberts fumbled the opening kickoff, but Eagles kicker Cody Parkey missed a 32 yard field goal, and then Griffin drove  the offense 76 yards in 12 plays, with fullback Darrel Young rushing for a one-yard touchdown. Parkey then missed a 46 yard field goal on the ensuing Philadelphia drive, and Griffin found Jackson again deep for a 55 yard pass, with Young again scoring from a yard out with 26 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 24-14.

The Eagles would rally in the fourth quarter, as they drove 85 yards in 11 plays, with Sanchez again finding Cooper in the endzone, this time from 16 yards out, to cut the lead to three with ten and a half minutes to go. On the Redskins’ next possession, Griffin went down the field to Jackson again, but was intercepted by Nate Allen, with Parkey making a 22 yard kick to tie it with 6:17 to go.

Philadelphia would have a chance to win it with 2:36 to go, with a drive starting from their own 15, but Sanchez was intercepted by rookie Bashaud Breeland with 1:31 to go at the Washington 42, and Griffin found Garcon on a 23 yard play with a roughing-the-passer penalty setting up Forbath for a 26 yard field goal with 5 seconds to go to get the win. Griffin was 16 of 23 for 220 yards and an interception, with Jackson catching four passes for 126 yards, while Sanchez was 37 of 50 for 374 yards, two touchdowns, an interception, and a lost fumble.
