Panthers Fall Short Against the Buccaneers, 16-10

The Carolina Panthers could not come back in the second half of their season opener, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16-10. The game started off dramatically with the rain and thunder at Raymond James Stadium, but the plays were less than spectacular.

The first half sought little action from the Panthers as the Buccaneers and quarterback, Josh Freeman took advantage. The Buccaneers scored their first touchdown of the season in the opening quarter of the game on a six yard pass from Freeman to wide receiver Mike Williams.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who is still facing doubters that believe he will suffer a sophomore slump this year, played a less than stellar game. Newton did not start off the game well, barely connecting with his receivers. Newton’s highlight came in the second half, as the Panthers scored quickly in the third quarter. Newton made a deep middle pass to wide receiver Brandon LaFell for a 22 yard touchdown cutting the Buccaneers lead to 13-7.

Despite a good start in the third quarter, Newton threw two interceptions later in the second half. After the touchdown, the Panthers quickly lost possession of the ball as Newton threw a short pass intended for Lafell and was intercepted by cornerback Ronde Barber. With barely any time left, Newton’s pass intended for wide receiver Steve Smith was intercepted again. The third quarter proved to be as slow as the opening half.

The Buccaneers extended their lead with a 40-yard field goal at 8:03 in the last quarter. The Panthers made a run in the fourth quarter by adding three points on a 21-yard field goal, but it was too late as the Buccaneers held onto possession of the ball for the rest of the game.

Newton finished the game 23 for 33 with 303 yards. Smith led the receivers with seven receptions for 106 yards.

The Panthers will have to pick up their game and improve their play before next week. The Panthers will host the New Orleans Saints next Sunday at 1:00.
