For everyone weary from the NFL lockout, a long term deal sounds very appealing right now. The term of the owners’ version of the settlement agreement ratified last Thursday was a long term deal lasting ten years, through the 2020 season.
That may not be the end of the story, though. During the press conference announcing the approval of the league’s proposal, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that it was a firm ten year deal, with no early opt out clause.
The players have been pushing for a seven year opt out, according to people with knowledge of the negotiations.
This had been one of the remaining open issues that needs to be resolved as the two parties work on finalizing a mutually acceptable agreement.
