NFL Players Dedicate Their Seasons To Children Of Parents Affected By Cancer

National Football League players Tyler Polumbus of the Washington Redskins, E.J. Manuel of the Buffalo Bills and Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers have all dedicated their season to Camp Kesem’s initiative “Scoring for Good.” Camp Kesem is a national organization that has pledged to support kids whose parents have been affected by cancer. Scoring For Good is a novel fundraising program in which participating NFL players will donate funds to Camp Kesem each time a qualifying play is made. Furthermore, fans and other donors, will be able to match their favorite player’s contributions. Scoring For Good officially launched with a mobile app for both iPhone and Android users at the start of the 2013 NFL season.

CampKesem_TylerPolumbusWashington Redskins’ right tackle Tyler Polumbus, has pledged to donate $1,000 for every 5 pancakes he makes during the 2013 season to send kids to a new camp in Colorado. “Getting a chance to play and have fun is so important for children, and so for this season, as I score pancakes, I will help send kids to Camp Kesem,” says Polumbus.

Buffalo’s rookie QB E.J. Manuel has pledged to donate $1,000 for every touchdown he makes this season. Manuel remarks, “When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, my life changed. Camp Kesem’s mission is one that I support deeply as I can relate directly to each camper they help. I am honored to be a part of Scoring For Good and cannot wait to start scoring for Camp Kesem.”

It costs Camp Kesem $1,000 to give a child one year’s worth of support. This includes: attending 1 week of summer camp and year-round reunions with their network of friends just like them.

“I want to give these kids a chance to leave these adult-sized problems behind and just be a kid at camp, and so for this season, every time I sack, I will help send one kid to Camp Kesem. One sack = one kid.  It’s scoring for good,” says Aldon Smith, outside linebacker of the 49ers and NFL 101 NFC Defense Player of the Year who has pledged to donate funds to send one kid to camp for every sack he completes during the 2013 season.

The mobile application will be available as a free download in iTunes and Android stores, under the name “Scoring For Good”, as well as at www.ScoringForGood.org. Its purpose is to encourage NFL fans to follow and match player contributions, in addition to encouraging other NFL players to join the effort. Users can download the application directly to their phones, sign up, and pledge to help their player of choice promote his performance this NFL season.

CEO of Camp Kesem, Jane Saccaro says, “Scoring for Good, especially in its mobile application form, represents not one, but two, exciting milestones for Camp Kesem – a new fundraising program and Camp Kesem’s introduction to the digital space. We are incredibly excited about this new venture and hope that all NFL fans and athletes will join in the fun!”

Additionally, the NFLPA’s One Team, One Community campaign will be promoting this program throughout the season. For more information, please visit www.CampKesem.org or www.ScoringForGood.org.
