It’s officially the half-way mark for preseason games as the regular season draws near. For the NFC East, there’s been some good, bad and ugly. But today we’ll focus on some of the young players who have shined bright so far in these exhibition games.
Dallas Cowboys:
- The Dallas Cowboys may not have a defense, but they have a potentially good, young offensive line. Not to mention, they have Dez Bryant who has been a complete stud this preseason. But one player who has looked pretty good, especially week two, is second year TE Gavin Escobar. The 6ft, 6 tight end is a match-up nightmare and has flashed playmaking ability this preseason. Dallas needs all the fire power they can get on offense and Escobar looks ready to help in that facet. The safety positions throughout the NFC East isn’t strong. So having a tight end who can stretch the field is crucial and beneficial.
Philadelphia Eagles:
- Rookie WR Jordan Matthews has been the talk of all things Eagles this summer. He’s apparently been the star of camp and the expectations are high. Matthews struggled his first preseason game dropping three passes but rebounded week two with nine receptions (on nine targets) for 104 yards. Matthews, in my opinion, was one of the safest WR picks in the 2014 NFL draft. I’ve maintained that he’s a guy with a high floor and low ceiling. Meaning, it’s safe to say he’ll make some plays early. But is he a potential superstar? That remains to be seen. Either way, the Eagles desperately need their receivers to step up and Matthews could be one of those guys.
New York Giants:
- The Giants have had success with a undrafted rookie receiver before in Victor Cruz. They could hit the goldmine and get another bang for their buck with undrafted rookie Corey Washington. The 6ft 4 receiver has hauled in three game winning TDs for the Giants this preseason. He reportedly was a star in training camp. So transferring that ability into games should benefit him a great deal. The Giants need all the help they can get at WR. So Washington could be a guy who makes the team.
Washington Redskins:
- Second year safety Bacarri Rambo has shined so far this preseason. I led his campaign train in 2013 during the pre-draft process. So he’s a guy I know is capable of being a solid player. But for some reason just struggled with the basics — such as tackling. So far, Rambo has taken better angles in preseason and he even forced a fumble Monday night. So he’s putting positive plays on film which should make the coaching staff happy. His issue was never coverage — he has the range and ability to be a true free safety. But he had to learn quickly, if you can’t tackle — you can’t play in this league.
