Former Jets quarterback Joe Namath has remained the most storied player in franchise history, even though his greatest moments were four decades ago. And this season, he has taken various shots at the team, including their lack of talent and Rex Ryan’s prodigious waistline, but now he sounds like a man looking to repair a broken relationship.
“I feel awful about it. I feel awful about my relationship with the Jets right now in the sense — I’m talking about the ownership, general manager and head coach,” said Namath. “I don’t want them upset with Joe, but damn it, I have to say what I see, what I think, what I feel.
He has been pretty outspoken, and some of the Jets players have responded accordingly – especially to his comments about “picking poor players.”
“With the current Jets situation the last few years, I just tried to explain how I felt about things, and when we talk about our head coach, the Jets head coach, he’s unique. I’ve never seen that style in all the years I’ve been around football.”
It would be good for the Jets Faithful to be able to reconcile their undying love for Namath with their support of the current team. We’ll see how the olive branch he offered today is received.
