Beginning in 1961, the Punt, Pass and Kick skills competition is the oldest youth program in the NFL. People like Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, have competed in the famous competition. On Tuesday night, the Miami Dolphins hosted the Punt, Pass and Kick clinic in Davie.
Dolphins players, kicker Andrew Franks, punter Matt Darr, quarterback Logan Thomas, long-snapper John Denney and tackle Jason Fox taught South Florida kids the three different skills to punt, pass and kick. The current Dolphins players were joined by alums Chris Conlin, Ray Crittenden, Deon Dyer, Lorenzo Hampton, Ed Perry and Lousaka Polite , who were also there to teach the children.
Ages of the children ranged from six-to-15-years-old. The participants were from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
The PP&K clinic has been a valuable tool to many current and former NFL pros who also participated in the clinic during their youth.
Miami Dolphins Youth & Community Affairs Manager Troy Drayton, who also a former Dolphins’ player, participated in Punt, Pass & Kick as a kid and he enjoyed being out there with the kids
“Rarely do you get a chance to meet guys that are on the field. Here you get a chance to learn from them. It’s making a great impact on the kids. We’re here to make Miami Dolphins fans. But we’re also here to teach them the fundamentals of football and make this game the great game that it is.”
Darr, who also was a participant of the Punt, Pass and Kick competition in his youth, also enjoyed being a part of the clinic.
“As a little guy, just like these kids out here, in my hometown we had a Punt, Pass and Kick. I wasn’t good at it back then. It was just fun for me to come out and learn. Fortunately for me, I’m doing it for a living now,” he said. “I think it’s awesome for me to be able to come out and show these kids how to punt and they’re getting that from an NFL player. The Miami Dolphins are a great organization for letting us use this indoor bubble and really get connected to these kids in the community.”
