While there are a lot of negative stories going on in sports right not, on Saturday the Miami Dolphins and AARP Foundation reminded everyone there are still positives things going on in the community.
The Dolphins, through their Special Teams Driven by the Chevy Volunteer program, teamed up with AARP Foundation to pack and deliver one million meals for struggling adults 50 and over in South Florida. The event was held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sun Life Stadium.
The event brought over 4,000 volunteers to aid the Dolphins in a great cause for South Florida. A number of the volunteers consisted of youth sports teams, churches community groups and Dolphins alumni which packed over 150,000 pounds of food for those less fortunate.
All the volunteers were all given a teal Dolphins/AARP shirt. AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson discussed how exciting it was to be at Sun Life Stadium for the event.
The energy inside and outside the tent was incredible. Seven percent of older Floridians are at risk of hunger each and every day,” Ryerson said. “It took a lot of people that were dedicated to the cause and the reason why it worked was because the Miami Dolphins and AARP Foundation were both committed to helping people in need in the community. These nutritious, high quality meals help people get food that will be incredibly meaningful in their lives.”
Miami Dolphins President & CEO Tom Garfinkel was also there speaking about the event and also volunteering.
“It was an amazing thing to see thousands of volunteers help pack meals today,” said Garfinkel. “It really hammers home the idea of stronger together for all of South Florida to join in this great event.”
As part of their agreement, the Dolphins will continue to have events to help adults 50 and over in South Florida. The team will have media campaigns and events that will impact one of the four priorities (hunger, isolation, income, and housing) of the AARP Foundation.
