VIDEO Rashean Mathis, the 6’1,” 193 lb cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars, spoke to ProPlayerInsiders about his hopes for his team’s season. His thoughts came before the surprise waiver of QB David Garrard, which occurred 5 days before the Jag’s season opener. Now Mathis’ words seem prophetic, “Now we’re rejuvenated…we’ve got a lot of guys ready to contribute.”
One of the guys ready to contribute is newly minted first string QB Luke McCown. In payment for his efforts Sunday, Coach Jack Del Rio gave McCown the offensive game ball for his 16-14 win over the Titans.
Maurice Jones Drew won an “Attaboy” for his contribution of 24 carries for 97 yards. Speaking of rejuvenated, this was MJD’s first regular season game back after knee surgery.
“I just wanted to get back in the game and hit some people,” Jones Drew said. MJD put 6 points on the board with a 21-yard run, but he snapped a streak of 65 games in which he had a reception, logging no passing yardage against the Titans.
Fan blogs are filled with running game versus passing game commentary, most of it vitriolic. The fans who love the running game are ecstatic over Sunday’s win. Fans who love the passing game are bored and angry.
Rashean Mathis said, “It’s gonna be exciting,” but he didn’t say how that excitement would manifest itself. For pass loving fans, it may not have been a pretty win, but as Jones Drew said post game, “At the end of the day, if you’re 1-0, what else matters? We’re going on the right track right now.”
Next week, that track leads to New York against the Jets, fresh off their Sunday night victory over the Cowboys.
