The biggest off season battle in the NFL is down to the Final Four – there are four players left vying for the cover spot on Madden NFL 2013. Players are eliminated NCAA tournament style, in face to face fan voting, and the final four battles are two superstar match ups. The first pits last year’s rookie QB phenom, Carolina’s Cam Newton, against the best linebacker in the league, San Francisco’s Patrick Willis. The second matchup pits Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, coming off one of the best NFL season’s ever for a quarterback, against perhaps the best wide receiver in the league, Detroit’s Calvin Johnson.
Given the infamous cover jinx, you would think more players would be out to avoid this “honor” but it is an honor none the less, as the Madden NFL game is one of the most successful franchises in the history of video games, and the game is popular not only with fans but with NFL players as well. The cover adds a certain cache and bragging rights.
If you have any doubts, just take a look at the lobbying done by the Patriots Rob Gronkowski, who went down in the last round in a matchup with Calvin Johnson, aka Megatron. Gronk definitely scores the most style points.
