Jon Beason eyeing opener after heel surgery

Panthers MLB Jon Beason has sat out all of camp with what doctors had deemed Achilles tendinitis. Turns out he actually had a bone bruise, for which he recently had surgery. The operation helped enough that Beason went from not knowing when he’d play to planning to return for the opener. The trouble now is conditioning. "This is probably the longest I’ve probably sat down ever. I can’t remember not running for two-plus months, ever," Beason told the team’s website. "I’m usually pretty active, and I think that’s a key to my game." If he’s back, it’s easy to imagine the team limiting his snaps early on. That would make Beason a very risky IDP start and likely enhance the scoring profiles of OLBs Thomas Davis and James Anderson. If Beason misses any regular-season games, Dan Connor would fill in at MLB.
