This week, New York Jets held workouts with former Cowboys and Jaguars receiver Laurent Robinson, and former Colts receiver Austin Collie.
With the health of number one wide-out Santonio Holmes still in question, and a supporting cast of relative unknowns, the Jets are still looking for help at the wide receiver position.
Robinson has only 167 catches in six NFL seasons. He has played the Falcons, Rams, and Chargers before having a breakout season with the Cowboys in 2011. Robinson’s big year earned him a five-year $32 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. After a 2012 campaign mired by injuries Robinson was released by the Jaguars on March 13. When healthy, Robinson is a legitimate threat as a slot receiver, but has not proven reliable when given any greater responsibility than that.
Austin Collie had a pair of successful years in Indy under Peyton Manning, but could not stay on the field enough last season to mesh with current Colts QB Andrew Luck. Collie, currently a free agent looking to catch on with New York, has suffered multiple concussions in his career to go along with a ruptured patellar tendon in 2009.
According to multiple reports the Jets are also seriously considering bringing back WR Braylon Edwards. Edwards was a key cog in the Jets offense for the later part of 2009 and 2010 after being acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. After brief stints in San Francisco and Seattle, Edwards rejoined the Jets last season as a wavier wire claim for the team’s final three games. If signed, Edwards could bring both size and some important veteran leadership to the Jets’ receiving corps.
The Jets also worked out kicker Billy Cundiff. If signed Cundiff could compete with the recently re-signed Nick Folk for the starting kicker job.
